The opening is the expensive part
A rangetop is not a drop-on lid. It sits down inside the counter run, its side trim standing 3/8 inch above the neighbouring counter surface, so the cabinet and the counter are both cut around it. A swap is simple only when the new one wants exactly the old hole. Otherwise it grows into counter and cabinet work, which is the installer’s job, not ours.
What a current Viking rangetop asks for
Viking’s installation manual for the 5 Series built-in gas rangetops sets out the opening. The width is 30, 36 or 48 inches to match the model. The space below the counter surface is 7-3/4 inches high, and the depth runs from 24 to 25-3/4 inches. Behind the unit, clearance to the wall is zero with a backguard or high shelf, zero with the standard island trim against a noncombustible wall, and 6 inches with island trim against a combustible one.
The manual also sets the hood bottom 30 to 36 inches above the countertop and rules out air-curtain hoods over the rangetop. An opening from the mid-1990s was cut for whatever went into it then, and we do not assume it matches.
Repair keeps the geometry
Repair keeps every one of those dimensions where it is. A new unit in an opening that does not fit brings a counter, a cabinet and sometimes a wall into the job. The rangetop stops being worth repairing when its body fails, not when the kitchen reaches a certain age.
