Swapping a Cooktop for a Rangetop: What Has to Change
Short answer
Turning a Viking gas cooktop into a Viking rangetop means a deeper opening, a different place for the regulator and often a stronger hood. That is installer and gas-fitter work. How the two sit in the counter
For Viking’s current VGC and VGSU cooktops the space below the counter is 2-3/4 inches, and the cutout runs between 18-3/4 and 20-1/8 inches front to back, depending on model. A 5 Series built-in rangetop drops much further into the cabinet run: 7-3/4 inches below the counter, 24 to 25-3/4 inches deep, and exactly 30, 36 or 48 inches wide. The cabinet under a cooktop usually has to be altered to take one.
Gas and power change less than you expect
Both families take a standard 1/2-inch ID residential gas line and plug into 120 V with a 4-foot three-wire grounded cord. The difference is the regulator. The cooktop ships with one that is fitted on the incoming line; the rangetop has one built in at the factory that must never be bypassed. Either way an installer-supplied manual shut-off sits ahead of the appliance, and supply changes are a gas fitter’s job.
The hood is the part people forget
Viking’s rangetop manual puts the hood bottom 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, bans air-curtain hoods, and wants wall cabinets directly over the cooking surface at least 42 inches up unless a hood is fitted. Viking’s wall-hood installation guide asks for a 1,200 CFM ventilator over a rangetop with a gas char-grill. A hood that suited the cooktop may not suit the rangetop, and a stronger one can raise the make-up air question.
Repair or replace: the signs
Repair it when
- The cooktop works well apart from a fault or two we can fix
- The swap would mean new counter, new cabinet and a new hood all at once
Replace it when
- A remodel is already taking the counter and cabinets back to bare walls
- You want the burners, griddle or width only a rangetop offers
Verdict Repair the cooktop when the swap is only a fix for its faults; move to a rangetop when a remodel is already opening the counter, cabinet and hood.

Does a bigger hood mean I need make-up air?
It can. The Washington residential code asks for make-up air on exhaust systems able to move more than 400 CFM where a fuel-burning appliance inside the air barrier is neither direct-vent nor mechanically vented.
