Downdraft Won't Rise or Won't Retract
Short answer
Before anything is priced, rule out the cooktop in front of the downdraft: Viking specifies a hairline gap between the two, and a shifted cooktop can stop the chimney. How the chimney should behave
On Viking’s 5 Series rear downdrafts, the VDD5300, VDD5360, VDD5450 and VDD5480, one touch of the up/down button raises or lowers the chimney. While it retracts, anything running shuts off; when it rises again, the fan and task light return to their earlier settings. A fan that stops on the way down is working as designed.
Your checks end at three. Make sure nothing rests on the lid. Try the breaker, remembering Viking recommends the downdraft sit on a circuit separate from the cooktop’s. A blinking filter icon only means 30 hours of fan time have passed, and a two-second touch clears it.
The gap at the back of the cooktop
Viking’s installation guide asks for 1/32 to 1/16 inch between the back of the cooktop and the front of the downdraft cover, so nothing interferes as the vent rises and lowers. A cooktop that has crept back closes that gap, and the chimney drags or stops partway.
When the downdraft has to come out
Viking notes that servicing the blower motor or the vent mechanism may mean taking the whole downdraft out of the cabinet, and that the cooktop must be disconnected and lifted out first. The same guide warns that drywall spray and construction dust on the power unit damage motor bearings, so a unit that lived through a remodel gets its bearings checked.
Repair or replace: the signs
Repair it when
- The chimney rubs a cooktop that has shifted and needs realigning, not replacing
- The up/down control or its supply has failed while the lift itself is sound
- The lift or the blower needs a part and the housing is undamaged
Replace it when
- The housing is bent, or the counter opening no longer holds it square
- Parts for the lift on that model can no longer be had
- The new cooktop has a griddle, which Viking says a rear downdraft must not be installed with
Verdict Realign or repair while the housing is straight and parts exist; replace only when the housing, or the cooktop in front of it, has changed the job.
