Cracked Glass on a Viking Electric Cooktop

Why a crack ends cooking straight away
A glass-ceramic top is the lid over the heating elements and their wiring. Once it breaks, whatever runs across it can run through it. Viking’s manual for its 5 Series electric cooktops is blunt on this: do not cook on a broken surface, switch the appliance off, and get a qualified technician. A crack that looks cosmetic is still an open path to live parts.
Glass alone, or the whole cooktop
We lift the top and test what sits under the break before naming a price, because a boil-over that found its way through can take an element or a control with it. If everything below is sound and a glass top is still made for your model, replacing the glass keeps the cooktop you have and the opening it sits in. If the damage reached the controls, or no glass can be found for that model, the sums change quickly.
What the manual lists as hard on the glass
Viking’s manual names three habits that mark or damage the surface. Sliding metal pans across it leaves grey metal marks. Sugar syrup that boils over can pit the glass unless the element is turned off and the spill wiped at once. Cast iron and empty or boiled-dry pans hold heat the glass is not meant to take.

Can I keep cooking on it if the crack is small and away from the burners?
