An Autumn Checklist for Plateau Kitchens
- Baffle filter — grease collects on the channels and drains to the bottom
- Blower (ventilator) — the only moving part pulling the air
- Backdraft damper — opens under airflow, falls shut when the fan stops
- Metal duct — smooth and straight is best; every elbow costs draw
- Roof or wall cap — where the air finally leaves the house
- Lights and controls — the lamps and the fan and light switches on the canopy

Why four checks and no more
We keep the list to four because each check has a clean place to stop. A fifth would reach into the ventilator, a gas fitting or a panel with power behind it, and that is where an owner’s part ends and ours begins.
What the results tell us
A hood that still pulls weakly with clean filters and a free cap has its fault in the ventilator or its controls. A flame that stays ragged after the caps and ports are clean points upstream of the burner. Both results are useful to us: they tell us where to start measuring, and they rule out the cheap causes before anyone pays for a visit.
The steps

Filters and trough through the wash
Breaker off, baffles out, then the dishwasher or a hot soapy sink, both of which Viking allows. On 18-inch-high hoods the grease trough soaks in the sink as well. Wipe the empty canopy with a soapy cloth while you are there.

Damper and outside cap, from below
Run the fan on high and watch the cap from the ground: the flap should lift and the opening should be free of needles or nests. Indoors, cold air falling from a switched-off hood points at the damper. No ladders on the roof.

Rangetop caps off, ports clear
On Viking 5 Series rangetops the caps pull straight up. Wash them in warm soapy water, dry them fully and keep them out of the dishwasher and the self-clean oven. A clogged port takes a straight pin, never a toothpick. Seat each cap level before lighting.

Cream the glass top
On Viking electric and induction cooktops, a few drops of glass-ceramic cleaning cream on the cool surface, worked with a damp paper towel and buffed dry, leave a protective film. Dish detergent strips that film, Viking says. A crack ends the checklist: stop cooking on it.

- A burner flame stays uneven or yellow after the caps and ports are clean
- The glass top shows a crack or chip of any size
- Any gas odour near the rangetop: no switches, everyone outdoors, then ring the gas company or 911
